The 1816m high location of the Veltline ski area is particularly popular with freeriders and those who like diversity. In 1805 Napoleon made Livigno into a custom-free zone so that the local people would use it as an incentive to remain there the whole year round, despite the cold winters. This area still holds this special status today. However, what was a disadvantage in the past, has now become an advantage in that the cold keeps the snow powdery for much longer and the sparsely-wooded slopes are ideal ski-touring terrain. Even if the summits are relatively unknown, imposing mountains are to be found at high altitude between the Bernina and Ortler group (Mt. Forcellina 2930m. Mt.Campaccio 2982m, Punta Casana 3007m, Mt.Breva, which lies directly opposite the Bernina, and many more). In addition, the genial deep snow-covered slopes are easily accessible by cable car and free bus connections make it possible to create an ideal medley of traverses, circular routes and diverse descents. Our accommodation, which is situated at the end of the valley, lies well outside the general hubbub of the ski-pistes.
